Keen footy fan Keith Clegg is a changed man since starting with our free Live Life Better Derbyshire weight management programme.

Keith, aged 76, from Glossop says he is proof that it’s never too late to make a positive change.

He said: “I thought I was too old to start this sort of stuff and I couldn’t be bothered with diets.

“If you had told me a few months ago that I would be going to a weight management group on a Monday evening and be happy I would have laughed at you!

“The only downside is I am going to have to spend some money on getting new clothes as the old ones don’t fit anymore.”

After spotting a Live Life Better banner in his local GPs surgery, and getting referred into the programme in September, Keith has lost nearly a stone and half.

He’s delighted with the support on offer and all the new knowledge that he’s gained and he’s keen to emphasise that weight management is not just for women.

“There’s lots that us men can learn and I would encourage anyone to come along and learn more.”

He added: “There’s no diet, you’re not told to watch the calories or that sort of stuff – nothing is off limits

“I have not changed what I eat. I can still eat what I like, I just eat less of it.

“You get told about the good, the bad and the ugly of the food world and then you can make your own decisions

“You’re not told what to do – you’re advised, it’s not finger wagging or preaching and I’ve lost 20lbs so far.”

During a Live Life Better session clients learn about a wide range of health and wellbeing topics including sugar, good and bad fats, balanced diets and portion control.

Keith is impressed by the amount of information that the programme gives.

He says: “Half of the things I have learnt I would never have dreamt of. For example too many grapes not being good for you because of the sugar. I thought they were healthy but it’s all about moderation!

“Every Saturday I go to watch Oldham Athletic and I used to have two meat and potato pies. I never thought there was any harm in it but now I just have one and I don’t miss that extra pie!”

Keith, who has been diagnosed with a serious heart condition is also taking part in the Health Referral Scheme.

This is a programme where eligible people can get free exercise sessions at their local leisure centre.

He says: “When you’re told you have severe heart failure you tend to get frightened to do anything, you sort of become a coach potato.

“But I knew I needed to do something so they told me about Health Referral Scheme and now I go to the gym as well as eat healthily.

“I can’t speak highly enough of Live Life Better Derbyshire and the support I have received, I want to shout from the rooftops!
