A small amount of fat is an essential part of a healthy, balanced diet and the main types found in food are saturated and unsaturated fats.

As a rough guide the average man should aim to have no more than 30g of saturated fat a day and the average woman no more than 20g.

However, as part of a healthy diet we should try to eat less food high in saturated fats and trans fats and replace some of them with unsaturated fats.

Unsaturated fats are broken down into two types – polyunsaturated and mono-saturated and can be found in a wide variety of different foods.
